The Biggest Muslim Weekend in America Is in Detroit This Labor Day

Over Labor Day weekend, one of the oldest and largest annual Muslim gatherings in North America takes over downtown Detroit, and the bazaar alone is worth the drive.

Every year there is one weekend where you walk into a convention center and every third person looks like somebody from your family. The ISNA Convention is that weekend, and in 2026 it is in Detroit: September 4 to 7, at Huntington Place, one block from the river.

We have been to enough of these to have opinions. The first time you go you spend two days wandering, buy four things you did not plan to buy, eat something questionable at 9 pm, and drive home saying you should have brought better shoes. The second time you go with a plan. This is the article we wish somebody had handed us before the first one.

What ISNACON actually is

The Islamic Society of North America has been running an annual convention for more than sixty years, which makes it older than most of the people who attend it. On paper it is a program of talks, panels, workshops and youth sessions. In practice it is four days of an entire community showing up in one building at the same time.

There is a main hall with the big sessions. There are smaller rooms running at once with everything from parenting workshops to career panels to Quran sessions. There is a film festival. There is a youth program that runs on its own track and is genuinely good, not a holding pen. There is a matrimonial event that aunties have been strategizing about since June. And there is the bazaar, which we will get to, because the bazaar is the reason half of us are there and everybody pretends otherwise.

Why Detroit is the right city for this

Metro Detroit has one of the deepest Muslim histories in the country. Families have been here for generations, not years. The result is a place where a halal butcher is not an errand, it is a choice between six of them, and where the bakery down the road has been making the same knafeh since before you were born.

What that means practically is that the convention is only half of your weekend. The other half is the drive out to Dearborn for the food. Budget for it. Go hungry. If you have read our piece on how halal food went mainstream in America, Detroit is the chapter that came first.

The bazaar, honestly

The bazaar is hundreds of vendors selling attar, abayas, books, jewelry, art, dates, prayer rugs, kids' toys, skincare, and roughly nine thousand variations on a hoodie. Most of them are small family businesses. Many of them are one person who took three days off work, drove a van full of inventory across two states, and is standing behind a folding table hoping this weekend covers the year.

We say that with love and full self interest, because that is exactly how we started. Buy from them. Ask them their story. The margin on a small booth at a convention is not what you think it is, and the person who remembers your name at the table is usually also the person who packs your box.

Seven things we wish we had known the first time

1Wear the shoes you would wear to an airport

You will walk five to seven miles a day without noticing. The convention center is enormous, the bazaar is on a different floor than most of the sessions, and you will do that loop more times than you plan to. This is not the weekend for new shoes.

2Pick three sessions, not thirty

The program is overwhelming on purpose. Everything runs at once. Choose three things you actually want, put them in your phone with alarms, and treat everything else as a bonus. The people who try to catch everything catch nothing and end the weekend exhausted.

3Do the bazaar twice

Walk the whole floor once with your hands in your pockets and buy nothing. Then go back for the three tables you kept thinking about. This is the single tip that has saved us the most money and gotten us the best things.

4Bring a bag you can carry all day

You will accumulate books, flyers, a water bottle, somebody's business card, and a small child's jacket. A tote you can sling over a shoulder beats the flimsy vendor bag that splits by hour four.

5Let the kids do the youth track

Parents who keep their teenagers glued to them all weekend miss the point. The youth program is where our nieces and nephews came back with actual friends in other states. Hand them a schedule and a meeting spot and let them go.

6Eat outside the building at least once

Convention food is convention food anywhere in the world. You are in one of the best halal food cities in America. Drive fifteen minutes.

7Say salaam to strangers

This is the whole thing, really. It is four days in a place where you can greet anyone and they will greet you back. Most of the year, most of us do not get that. Use it.

What we actually take home from it

Every year we drive back with a car full of things we did not need and one thing we did. Somewhere in four days of noise, a stranger tells you about the year they had, or a speaker says one sentence that stays with you through November, or your kid comes back from a youth session with a look on their face like the world got bigger.

That is what the weekend is for. The knafeh is a bonus.
