Hospitality is not about what you own. It is a set of small habits anyone can build, starting this week.

Assalamu alaikum, friends. When we were newlyweds setting up our first apartment in Columbus, we hosted our first dinner with two folding chairs, a borrowed pot of biryani and a lot of nerves. Our guests stayed four hours. That night taught us something we have believed ever since.

In Muslim tradition, the guest is a blessing. Our Prophet, peace be upon him, taught that whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor their guest. Here are nine habits that have made our own home feel more open, one small step at a time.

1. Keep a guest drawer stocked

One kitchen drawer holds everything we need when someone drops by: nice napkins, a lighter for the oud, spare prayer caps, and a stash of chocolates and dates. When the doorbell rings unexpectedly, we are ready in two minutes instead of twenty. If you have overnight guests even a few times a year, add a small bin with fresh towels, a spare prayer mat and travel toiletries.

2. Learn one signature welcome drink

Every home needs a drink it is known for. For us it is doodh patti chai, simmered slowly with cardamom. For your family it might be Moroccan mint tea, Yemeni qishr or just really good lemonade. Serve it within ten minutes of a guest sitting down. The speed matters more than the drink.

3. Set the table before they knock

A table set in advance tells guests they were expected and wanted. Even for casual visits, we lay out a fruit bowl and small plates before anyone arrives. It removes the awkward first fifteen minutes of scrambling in the kitchen while guests sit alone in the living room.

4. Make the prayer space obvious

Nothing makes a Muslim guest feel more at home than not having to ask where to pray. We keep two folded prayer mats visible in a basket near the bookshelf, with a small sign of the qibla direction. Guests quietly excuse themselves and return without any fuss. Non-Muslim guests often ask about it, and those turn into some of our favorite conversations.

5. Cook one dish that scales

Hospitality falls apart when the food math gets stressful. Pick two or three dishes you can stretch from four servings to ten with little effort: a big daal, a tray of baked chicken, a pot of soup with fresh bread. 6. Honor the guest of honor, quietly

If someone is visiting for a reason, a new baby, a new job, a recent umrah, mark it somehow. It can be as simple as their favorite dessert or as personal as a small gift waiting at their seat. 7. Put phones in a basket, gently

Our mothers both did this and we finally understand why. A container of leftovers, a few clementines, a small bag of the good dates. The visit ends, but the kindness travels home with them. Keep a stack of inexpensive containers you never expect back.

9. Invite before the house is ready

This is the habit that unlocks all the others. If you wait until the house is perfect, you will host twice a year. Invite people while the couch is worn and the walls are half decorated.
