World Cup Fever: Hosting a Watch Party the Whole Muslim Family Will Love

A watch party playbook that works for everyone from the two year old to the grandfather who claims he does not care and then yells the loudest.

Assalamu alaikum, friends. The World Cup is being played on American soil this summer, and our Columbus living room has been reorganized around one large screen. Muslim families around the world are soccer families, from Casablanca to Karachi to right here in Ohio.

Schedule around salah, not the other way around

Kickoff times are public weeks in advance, so check the prayer times before you send the invite. The move that changed our gatherings: we pray together at halftime or right before kickoff, jamaat style, in the biggest room. Fifteen guests lining up behind one uncle while the pregame show hums in the background is a core memory factory. Nobody misses a goal and salah never gets squeezed out.

The halal watch party menu

Match food should be one-handed, because the other hand is busy pointing at the referee. Keep the volume, lose the drama

House rules that keep it wholesome: cheer as loud as you want for goals, no cursing at screens, and the remote lives with the calmest person in the room. If a match gets tense, someone refills the snacks. Soccer is the excuse, togetherness is the point.
