A boy who once stopped to watch a street artist sketch strangers in Cyprus now runs a full-time caricature business in Dubai, drawing a finished face in about a minute.

When Adeel Saeed was a boy growing up in Turkish Cyprus, he used to stop and watch a street artist sketching passersby under a tree in Nicosia. One afternoon the artist waved him over and let him try. That single afternoon turned into a lifelong habit, then a move to the UAE in 2004, then more than a decade of drawing thousands of faces at weddings, product launches, and corporate galas across the Middle East. Today Saeed runs Caricature UAE out of Dubai, and he has gotten good enough at his craft that a caricature that used to take him eight or nine minutes now takes about one.

1From Graphic Designer to Full-Time Muslim Entrepreneur

Saeed did not set out to draw caricatures for a living. He landed in the UAE working in the events industry as a graphic designer and 3D visualizer, with caricature sketching a side habit left over from childhood. The turn came almost by accident: during an informal test at work, he drew his boss. The sketch was good enough to land him his first paid caricature assignment at a company event. For about a year he kept both jobs, sketching evenings and weekends while holding down his design role, before the caricature work became steady enough to go all in. More than a decade later, Caricature UAE has drawn crowds at hundreds of events, working weddings, private parties, and corporate functions in traditional black-and-white and full color, on paper and digitally.

More than fifteen years since that first paid sketch, Saeed still works mostly the same way: a table, a stack of blank paper or a tablet, and a line of strangers waiting to see themselves the way he sees them. It is a good reminder that a business worth building sometimes starts with nothing more than stopping to watch, and then asking if you can try.
